How to repair a small hole in your drywall
Fixing smaller holes caused by wall anchors and nails can be done using simple spackling paste and sand paper. Remove anchors and get the repair surface clean and smooth. Then follow this step by step to repair the hole.
- Prepare the hole
Use a ballpen hammer to create a depression in the hole. This allows your spackle to fill properly. If the hole is a little wide, you can fill it up with some newspaper to allow your spackle additional support.
- Fill the hole with spackle
- Sand
- Finally, apply paint over the area so it appears as though nothing ever happened.
Repairing larger holes
You'd need more than a spackling paste and sandpaper.
- Sandpaper. - Dust mask. - Taping knife.
- Joint compound. - Drywall screws. - Screws gun
- Drywall tape - Drywall saw. - Drywall.
- First, check for wires before cutting out damaged drywall. Then, cut out the area you wish to replace with a drywall saw after you have gotten a drywall patch that you intend to use to replace it. Ensure the patch is larger than the hole, up to 4 inches taller.
- Fasten the wall hole patch to the wall using screws leaving at least half an inch on each side. Allow the screw heads to sink into the wall a little.
- Tape the joint by applying drywall compound around the joint area. We'd advise to lay a first layer 1/8 inch thick of drywall compound and then place tape down the seams in the compound to the wall. Immediately, apply another layer of compound on the tape and leave to dry. Then, apply a third layer beyond the joint area to make the surface as smooth as you can.
- Now, use your sanding paper to smoothen the already dry surface of the wall, removing ridges and blending surrounding areas.
- Finally, paint your drywall repaired surface and give yourself a job well done.
FAQ'S
What is drywall?
Drywall is also known as plasterboard and is a material made from gypsum and used in the construction of walls and ceiling for residential and commercial buildings. It replaced the use of plaster to cover walls and doesn't use water in its application. It is a modern construction material, faster to install and more economical. It comes in different sizes, large ones to minimize joints and smaller ones for fine decoration.
Is drywall resistant to fire?
Yes, drywall can be fire resistant to three different levels but it is not fireproof. There is a very specific drywall that has to used according to code, not all drywall is fire resistant. Depending on the manufacturer, drywall and its parts will be assigned a time value according to laboratory testing that determines how long it can withstand fire before the wall collapses. This feature is to allow people in a burning house to escape and fire fighters to arrive. A fire rated wall may endure for an hour or two depending on the specification.
Can I install drywall on my own
If you have basic carpentry skills, yes. You can install drywall on your own or with the help of a friend with simple tools. If you're doing it for the first time, don't expect it to be perfect as it does take practice, but at least you'd set it up to an acceptable standard. However, if you're installing drywall yourself, what is recommended is that you handle smaller projects like repairs and maintenance while leaving the construction work to trained professionals. This is just recommended to ensure that a safe and proper job is done and your walls are well set up.
What are the advantages of drywall
Drywall is usually compared with plaster to weigh its advantages. The material from which this board is made is fire resistant and easy to set up, requiring less labor force and duration of installment. It is easily decorated and painted and quite durable too. It is cheaper than plaster and easy to replace and repair when damaged.
What is greenboard?
There are different types of drywall, but they are all essentially made from similar material. Greenboard and tile baker board are examples. Greenboard is one that uses moisture resistant paper. It is useful in parts of the house that get moist easily or comes in contact with water very often. Places like the kitchen, laundry, bathrooms and even the ceiling.
Horizontal or vertical placement during installation, does it matter?
If the mode of placement is important, it will be specified by the manufacturer. Fire rated board may require specific mode of assembly. This may be required to maintain the manufacturer's specified fire resistance of the board and aid its finishing. Generally for long spans and to ensure strong seams, drywall is recommended to be hung horizontally.
When drywall gets wet, is it still viable?
Gypsum is not harmed by a little bit of water, only when in excess and saturated. If it's not a moisture resistant board type, then it may be recommended that you remove the affected part. However, if the exposure to moisture is only temporary and the paper material is still intact, then the problem is not immediate. Simply get the moisture wiped off and the board dried immediately then refinished to the wall. If not, a replacement should be made.
